This is a free, all-ages event, held outdoors on unceded coast salish territory.
Other festival events include music performances by: Only A Visitor, Gamelan Bike Bike, and Red Moon.
Otonomi // Sound Zines
Otonomi is a mechanical percussion contraption created with a toy metallophone, drums, hammers from an upright piano and electro-magnet switches from an electric organ. Inspired by the playful works of Trimpin and Conlon Nancarrow, otonomi is a meeting of programmed/electronic music and acoustic instruments in sculptural form. Exploring poly-rhythm and multiple tempo relationships, the installation invites the listener to multiply and extend their perception of sound amongst the motion of shifting points of reference.
Sound Zines is an ongoing participatory drawing project that invites listeners to explore and interpret the sounds around them in the park through visual gestures, marks and invented notation. Participants are given their own Sound Zine booklet and are invited to graphically interpret the rhythms of Otonomi installation and the surrounding soundscape of Hadden Park. Participants are then invited to add their drawings to a group collage which will serve as a collection of diverse sensory observations embedded in one shared soundscape.
